The state PIRGs' New Voters Project is the largest non-partisan youth voter mobilization initiative in electoral history.

The state PIRGs' New Voters Project is working in partnership with a broad coalition of businesses, colleges and universities, political and community leaders, and other non-partisan organizations to lay the framework necessary for a successful broad-based voter registration and GOTV effort targeted at disengaged 18-to-30 year-olds. The state PIRGs' New Voters Project is focusing on six states, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, and Wisconsin.

By late August, the state PIRGs' New Voters Project will have an established presence in the following states:
Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, Washington and West Virginia.

Non-Partisanship
Our goal is to ensure that America's youth reclaim their voice in our democracy. To that end, we will be registering and turning out all young voters, regardless of their race, religion, or political party. How they vote on Election Day is not important to our campaign; that they do vote is essential. The state PIRGs' New Voters Project will not use any messages designed to lead voters in a particular direction.

Joint voter registration efforts with business leaders:
One of the creative ways the state PIRGs' New Voters Project is reaching our target age group is by partnering with businesses who care about investing in their community's future. The state PIRGs' New Voters Project is able to translate our extensive national partnerships and field experience into effective tools and opportunities for interested businesses to register their customers and employees to vote.

To kick-off our summer registration drive, the state PIRGs' New Voters Project teamed up with businesses to celebrate the 4th of July by organizing on-site voter registration for customers and employees with over 200 businesses in our six core states. Among our most high-profile national partners are Wells Fargo, Tower Records, Southwest Airlines, and American Family Insurance.

The state PIRGs' New Voters Project provides the on-site voter registration support to businesses by:

  • providing voter registration trainings for businesses interested in registering their customers and employees
  • supplying on-site voter registration kit that will provide a 'how to' for on-site voter registration for customers and employees
  • in select locations, the state PIRGs' New Voters Project can also provide experienced voter registration staff and volunteers to run voter registration for customers and employees; additionally the state PIRGs' New Voters Project is able to provide assistance in collecting and routing voter registration forms in these states

Through the summer and fall, the state PIRGs' New Voters Project will continue to work with businesses to help them ensure their employees and customers are registered to vote. The state PIRGs' New Voters Project is organizing a second National Voter Registration Week in September.

National Voter Registration Week, September 18-24
This upcoming week will provide a unprecedented one-time opportunity for businesses to establish themselves as community leaders, and to show their customers and employees that they are investing in the future of our democracy.
